A Couple of my Favorites!

This is a two-part post making up for yesterday! Oops!
It brings another HIIT treadmill workout (I swear by these), killer ab workout, and one of my favorite go-to snacks! I'll start with the food first :)

Grapefruit. It is a large subtropical citrus fruit generally recognized for its slightly bitter and sour taste. It was first produced in Barbados as a hybrid fruit that resulted from a cross between pomelo and sweet orange. Grapefruit was named after the grape, because grapefruits grow in clusters like grapes.

Many grapefruit varieties are being cultivated in different countries such as the United States and China. The well-known varieties include those with red, pink and white pulp. Like all other citrus fruits, grapefruit is loaded with vitamin C, although this is not the only benefit that you can get from grapefruit. Here are five other health benefits of grapefruit.

1. Grapefruit Helps in Losing Weight

Grapefruit is high in enzymes that burn fats, has high water content and has less sodium. A combination of these three characteristics make grapefruit a perfect food for increasing your body’s metabolism. Try eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice every day and you will notice how quickly you lose those extra pounds.

2. Prevents Arthritis and Works as an Antiseptic

Grapefruit contains salicylic acid that helps break down the body’s inorganic calcium, which builds up in the cartilage of joints and may lead to arthritis. If you have arthritis, try drinking grapefruit juice with apple cider vinegar. You will notice a reduction in your arthritis symptoms.

The salicylic acid in grapefruit also works as a powerful antiseptic. In addition, grapefruit seed extracts can be added to water to make an antiseptic spray for treating bacterial and fungal infections.

3. Grapefruit Helps in Cancer Prevention

Lycopene is a carotenoid pigment that is responsible for the red color of grapefruit. It is a powerful agent against tumors and cancers as it acts as a scavenger of cancer-causing free radicals. Lycopene works best with vitamins A and C, which are also found in grapefruit.

An antioxidant compound, called naringenin, is also found in grapefruit. Naringenin helps repair damaged DNA in prostate cancer cells. DNA repair contributes to cancer prevention as it impedes the reproduction of cancer cells.

4. Grapefruit Helps Lower Cholesterol Levels

The antioxidants found in grapefruit are effective in reducing cholesterol levels. However, if you are on prescription drugs, do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice. Grapefruit has a negative reaction against many prescription drugs such as those used in treating depression, allergies, high blood pressure, seizures, impotence, heart palpitations and even HIV. Inform your physician if you want to use grapefruit as a regular form of treatment.

5. Grapefruit Treats Common Ailments

Eating grapefruit or drinking its juice helps treat common cold and fever, dissolve gallstones, boost liver function and enhance immunity against infections. As grapefruit contains a dietary fiber called pectin, it thus promotes better digestion. In addition, if you want to have healthy and smooth skin, try including grapefruit in your diet.

You can get many other benefits from grapefruit because it also contains essential elements such as iron, calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, folic acid and B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin and niacin). You can even extract oil from grapefruit peel for use in aromatherapy.

LOVE this fruit. I eat it daily.. sometimes a couple times on those days I can't get enough!

Tone It Up Tuesday!

Here's Day 2 of my fitness posts for this week! Today's workout is another HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training - explained below) treadmill workout followed by a serious leg workout.

What is HIIT?

HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. The basic premise behind HIIT is that you work really hard for a short burst and then have an active recovery period. Generally speaking, you may sprint for 30 seconds and then jog or walk for 1 minute. You would repeat this workout routine numerous times for the best effect.

The Benefits of HIIT

A HIIT workout offers myriad benefits. First, HIIT provides a great workout for your legs. If you perform HIIT a few times per week, you probably don’t even need to do strength training for your legs, unless you have a desire for bigger legs. More importantly, HIIT really ramps up fat burning. The intense intervals allow for the release of fatty acids into the bloodstream. Additionally, HIIT results in increased HGH levels. HGH is a hormone that burns fat while preserving muscle. Finally, and possibly most importantly, HIIT results in EPOC, an after-burn effect which causes you to burn calories for hours after your workout is completed.

Here's how it goes:

5 minute warm-up at 5.0

1 minute 8.0

2 minutes 5.5

1 minute 8.0

2 minutes 5.5

And so on....

Do this for 35 minutes

Followed it up by 4 sets of 25 squats

And 100 alternating lunges (10 on each side)

My legs were seriously screaming by the end. Definitely get a good stretch session in and ice if you feel you need it. Stay tuned for tomorrow's workout.. it's a new favorite! :)

ENJOY!!

I got this FABULOUS turkey chili recipe from Heather.. perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon:)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped

  • Nonstick cooking spray

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon cumin

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/4 each red and yellow bell pepper (or half a bell pepper of any color), chopped

  • 1 small can of pureed tomatoes or tomato sauce (about 8 ounces)

  • 1/2 cup zucchini, chopped

  • 1/4 pound ground turkey breast

  • 1/4 cup canned red pinto beans, drained and rinsed

  • Cooking Directions

Over medium-high heat, saute the onion in a nonstick skillet coated in cooking spray until soft. Add the chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.
Stir in the garlic and bell peppers, and cook until the peppers are soft and the garlic is golden but not burned.
Stir in the tomato sauce and the zucchini.
When all the vegetables are soft, add the turkey breast and beans.
Let the chili simmer for at least 10 or 15 minutes. The longer you simmer, the better the flavor.
    Serve.

    Enjoy!

    Rules for Thanksgiving!

Rule #1: This is Thanksgiving dinner, not Thanksgiving Week, Month, and Year
Make sure and stick to your meal plans for the rest of the day, and for the rest of the week. Thanksgiving dinner is 1 meal out of 5 this Thursday. And it’s only 1 of 25 for the entire week. Stick to your other meals throughout the day. Why? You won’t over-stuff yourself on one unhealthy meal (and you’ll keep your metabolism up!).

Rule #2: You don’t get bonus points for only having one meal
Don’t starve yourself and skip other meals just so that you’ll “have more room” to eat more Turkey. Obviously if you follow Rule #1 you’ll have no problem with this one, but being overweight, I am starting to see how various “bend the rules” ideas pop up. They do for me too. Resist the urge.

Rule #3: Stick to a realistic definition of a “portion”
When you are at the dinner table, eat smaller portions of the good stuff. If you know you’ll be eating some of your favorite Thanksgiving foods, limit yourself to smaller portions (fist size – and this isn’t an Andrew The Giant fist, people!). If you follow this rule, you’ll be able to comfortably enjoy all of your favorites, and avoid heading back for seconds, thirds, or twelfths.

Rule #4: One dessert. Wait let me be more specific. One portion of one dessert!
Yes, I said one (I’m suddenly glad so few of you know where I live. I feel a Thanksgiving mutiny coming on!). No need to have a slice of every pie that’s there. Coming back to random Andre The Giant references, a slice is a regular, moderate slice. And if you don’t cut the pie, it doesn’t mean the entire pie is now a slice!). Every holiday or birthday party I attend, I have a small piece of dessert. I just do it in moderation. Eat it slower too – you’ll enjoy it more!

Rule #5: Enjoy yourself! This is NOT a fad diet. This is a lifestyle
"Like I said on Dr. Oz, I would splurge a bit on the weekends and holidays while sticking to the rules above. This way you always still enjoy yourself at parties or on holidays and yet you don’t throw away all your results from the week by consuming 10,000 calories in just one sitting.
In addition to the above, we will be sharing some healthy alternatives that you are welcome to try on Thanksgiving Day. For example, instead of a traditional cheese ball and crackers, my wife is making homemade almond and cashew butter to dip fresh fruits and veggies into. We will be posting some healthy alternatives on our site on or around Tuesday of next week."
